A novela conta a história de Rita (Débora Falabella), filha do viúvo Genésio (Tony Ramos), que tinha acabado de casar com Carmem Lúcia (Adriana Esteves), a Carminha, uma mulher falsa que aparentava ser simples e sem maldade. Carminha tinha um caso de anos com Max (Marcello Novaes), seu parceiro na trapacearia, e eles tramaram um plano para roubar todo dinheiro de Genésio e fugir, mas Rita atrapalhou o planejado e conseguiu desmascarar Carminha para seu pai. Pouco mais tarde, Genésio é atropelado por um jogador famoso de futebol, o Tufão (Murilo Benício), que tenta o socorrer mas sem sucesso. Se sentindo culpado, Tufão oferece ajuda a Carminha, que vê ali uma ótima oportunidade para tramar mais um golpe. Ela se aproxima de Tufão, mas precisa sumir com Rita. Ela pede a ajuda de Max para leva-la para um lixão e deixa-la abandonada. Anos depois, Rita reaparece na vida de Carminha de um jeito um tanto curioso, com sede de vingança e será capaz de muita coisa para ver Carminha e Max detonados.
